Rappers control the content of their mixtapes... Corporate record labels control the content of their albums..

Why would you chose what the suits want you to hear as a better option?
I don't like this "excuse", you can't blame everything on the label. There's plenty of ways to get yourself out there without signing to a label or have them puppet string you. Labels only want artists to sign if they are going to be worth their investment.

The problem with this statement is that there is virtually no difference between a mixtape or an album unless you're one of the major players in the game.

Which material makes you more memorable legacy-wise 20 years down the line? :lupe:
nikkas could have the Thriller album on their mixtape, and it'll still be forgotten
Naw the games changed...Frank Ocean, The Weekend and Drake put out mixtapes that's some of the seminal music of their era...

And the digital release has changed the whole experience of buying physical copies, ripping the plastic off and going through the credits...

No excuse because when mixtapes were at their peak from '01 to '07, the tapes was for material that would not fit the flow of an album or material they would not recorded for an album like Jeezy or Dip Set.

Look what happened to Nelly. If we invested more into our artist, then they would invest more into the albums. People are always on some, "Mixtapes are better than his albums! " Which gives the consumer an excuse to not pay for the album. So nikkas are just setting up their tour money with a bunch of random songs they do while their drunk. Go on tour with that. Album comes out, go on tour with that. 360 deals killed the one every year or year and a half rap artist.

It's not really their fault imo. That what the Internet has turned hip-hop into today. A lot of fan bases are not loyal now so if u go away for a yr or something without dropping anything in between then fans will just move onto the next, and when you do come back they won't really fukk with like that. Speaking in general.

Also mix tapes today especially from the more popular artists are basically albums (street albums). The labels basically let u do what u want now days so its upto the artist to keep relevant.
Thats never been proven to be true though.. rappers just have an anxiety over that

J Cole waited 2 years to drop his album & hes one of the only success stories (from a commercial standpoint) this year :yeshrug:

As long as the artist carves out a niche fans will stick around

I was listening to Public Enemy #1 recently and was thinking that it would've been a great album. I guess a lot of it would've been on Killa Season 2. I slept on it way too long.
