Heltah Skeltah was way underrated. Nocturnal is a classic

I REALLY think they could have been "OutKast" famous, real talk. Them dudes can spit, got jokes, make good songs....never understood why the world slept on them.

They're easily my favorite duo.
They even came back 10 years later and dropped another classic :wow:

Also, if Heltah Skeltah (Magnum Force, Ruck n Rock) would've came out just a LITTLE earlier, they would've been EPMD reincarnated and would be bonafide legends by now.

I feel the same way about Screwball. The classic Y2K came out in 2000... It would've been huge in the 90's imo...

i'll say this much. in fairness to some of these guys who have styles suited for previous eras but dont have the talent to compete in those eras, alot of those guys probably wouldnt be solo artists had they come out back then.

they would be in groups, and probably would have done better in that role.

:ehh:

what yall think?

That's true. You don't have any groups anymore. I guess nikkas thought its profitable to go solo. But then they got 30 features on the album cuz they cant carry a solo album

yea this has been one of my main gripes with hip-hop & music in general this century.

and on the flipside, most of the old groups that we hold in high regard, how many of them would even be remembered like that if they came out solo?

even with the guys that did stand out with solo potential, most of them wouldnt have been the same either.

i can def see a papoose or joey badass making noise in the '90s in a group capacity.

i was about to say troy ave, but hes more of a mid-00s guy, and groups were dead by then. sorry troy.

It takes a lot of work to be a real group, and not 2-4 rappers rapping on the same song all the time....that type of synergy isn't really found anymore, cause you can't really create that unless it's truly organic.

her and kelis are two who had their who swag jacked. ke$sha actually monetized the kid sister swag (nicki to an extent as well) and we know rihanna jacked 2006 kelis's swag something serious. kelis would've been a more viable artist today than when she dropped in 99/00

Rihanna realllllllly swagger jacked the shyt outta Fefe Dobson and they were on the same damn label. Island Def Jam figured they could make things pop with Rihanna and tossed Fefe in the bushes

This is a whole nother thread breh.

Good rap is a careful mix of ego, humility and competitiveness. Rap today is ALL ego with some attention whoring sprinkled on top. nikkas today dont have the humility or capacity to be part of a "group". A dude will be a solo rapper and CEO of a label where he is the only artist.

I think Roc Marciano should have came out around the time Forever dropped, dude would have had an awesome start as a Wu-Tang affliate spitting that pimp, godbody gutter shyt over soul samples. Debuts in '97, releases his debut in '99 produced by Bobby Digital in Stereo era RZA. Guest features include GFK, Rae, Prodigy, EPMD, Busta Rhymes. Holds it down for Long Island with Busta through the 00's.
:ohlawd:

Rick Ross should have came out in 1995. In that timespan we all know rappers like Nas, AZ, Jay, Rae, Ghostface, Kool G Rap, Biggie were all doing the mafioso thing. Ross would have never been identified as a former correctional officer so his reputation wouldn't take a hit. He would be one of the best mafioso rappers and he would be considered one of the rappers that put the South on in the 90's.
:yeshrug:

Joey BADA$$ should have came out in 1993. He could have reached some good success locally especially. The Big Dusty single he released for his debut album sounds like some shyt that could have been on the first Black Moon album. With his age and skillset The Source would be all over his dikk, and he'd be a mainstay on The Stretch and Bobbito Show. Big K.R.I.T. had he came out of Atlanta in the mid-90's. I think he would fit right in with the heavy bass sound and he would have fit right in with Dungeon Family, he would have made a great OutKast affiliate.

I disagree with some of these like someone said Lupe and Wale should have came out in the early 90's in the alternative rap era. IMO they came out at the perfect time post-College Dropout. I think Max B came out at the right time, prison is really what fukked him up. Mos Def also came out at the perfect time, he came out with conscious rap strong and that hipster millennium neosoul strong. Digable Planets also came out at the perfect time.
