I give it a 10. One of my top 5 animes ever. Though I'm biased when it comes to GITS. I'm hoping that since this is for SAC that means that the movie is going to have its own day.
Later today. I’m getting in the habit of doing the movie then the show or vice versa.

I didn't like Ghost in the Shell when it aired on toonami. Everyone is an adult - couldn't relate. Lots of political discussion - don't care. Robots have kidlike voices for some reason - creepy.

Then I watched it again a few years ago after I'd already broken into the sci-fi genre and it became a favorite. What it does so well is give the viewer what feels like an accurate projection into a future where cybernetics are dominant and the societal consequences of that. It shows that no matter how far we progress in science, we will never be able to completely eliminate human vulnerabilities and there will be a desire for genuine human expression that trumps machinery. Between the Stand Alone Episodes (focused on section 9 solving various cases) and then the Complex Episodes (Focuses on the main story, linear), we get a very comprehensive picture of the universe, the politics and people that shape it, and the struggles of living within it.

If you do not care about the substance of GITS, then it's boring. But I think a lot of those people can still enjoy old fashion hand to hand beatdowns. No super powers. No transformations. Just soldiers trained to fight and win by whatever means necessary. Helps with immersion into a world that may become reality someday.

There is nothing better out there if primarily interested in cyberpunk concepts. Other shows may be more popular today, but not because it represents the genre better than SAC. gets a 10

lots of memorable OSTs that'll stay in a playlist shuffle forever. was always partial to this one
