Ninja what?
I posted about Gangsta every week in the anime thread. Everyone including myself thought it was one of the best shows of the year for months. Has a very unique, grimey setting dominated by gang activity, prostitution, drug trafficking, all kinds of dirty stuff anime are usually afraid to even touch even though it's true to certain pockets of inner city life. The main characters have great designs and you look forward to seeing them in action/learning more about their story; Nicholas, Alex and Worick all have endearing backstories that make you want to root for their success as people. There's a point mid season where Alex gets on stage to perform a song. It's a breakthrough moment for her character that had been through so much trauma up until that point. One of the better scenes in the show and you're thinking more is to come after that
but immediately after that episode, for whatever reason, all the exploration and character development slows to a crawl and barely anything of interest goes on. The ending is awful. Then we hear the studio that produced Gangsta went bankrupt two days after the finale. Explains a lot.
Gangsta is a case of show that teases you with potential only to leave you hanging. It's just about the worst feeling you can have as a seasonal anime watcher. Maybe it's not so terrible if you binge watch it all at once, or just don't have high expectations to begin with, but if you experience the trainwreck live and had to wait seven days just to be disappointed again and again it'll leave a bad taste in your mouth. Giving it a 4.

It had potential, but the cliff hanger ending is what killed it. Cliff hanger endings are tricky. They can be done in a way where the season is resolved, but the bigger threat or issue is still out there type of shyt. BTOOM is an example of that. Deadman Wonderland is another one. Sure you wanna know what happens next, but at least the current problem is finished. Gangsta's cliff hanger was on some abrupt shyt right when you were just about to understand everything and shyt picks up.
You never end an anime like that. shyt ends up being a big what if scenario. Its like a boxer finally earns his title shot at the Champ, but he does some random dumb shyt and goes to prison and we all left like damn, that nikka could of been the one.
Great characters, dope animation and fight sequences, but as far as gangsta animes goes, its not seeing 91 days. That revenge shyt with the liquor. That anime was dope as fukk.

We’re talking about the movie though, right? Not the series. If it’s just the movie then yeah, the 9 makes sense. It does get boosted by that nostalgia factor though. As for Gangsta, co-sign whoever said the shyt just falls short at a point. It kinda becomes a chore to watch. And if recall it came out in a season with much better shows, too. I gotta look into that part though.
