Columbia is a very under rated city with a good location for day trips or quick trips when you need a change of scenery. It gets over shawdowed by Charleston, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach and even Greenville but it still holds its own and is growing at a consistent clip. The population of Columbia or any South Carolina city is misleading because of outdated annexation laws that make it hard to expand city lines. It's so many donut holes area where one end of the street is the city and the other part is the county so you'll have double services going to the same street for water, trash pick up, police calls and even schools. I've had to explain this to people here in Alabama over and over again who think Columbia is the size of Mayberry pointing to the city pop stating Mobile, Montgomery and Huntsville are larger. Once I put them onto MSA pop which shows not only the city limits but the surrounding metro pop they changed their tunes. Each of those Alabama cities were around 410k MSA and Columbia is about 812k pop which shocked most of them. One had to actually go to Columbia on a business trip and they literally came back raving about the time they had, places they ate and things they did. It's a city that has a better rep outside the state by people who visit than in the state until you leave and realize it's a good city to be in. I actually think that with the way Charleston is booming and how bad the traffic already is...more people will look at Columbia.

Daytrips galore to Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Hilton Head, Savannah, Wilmington, NC, Raleigh, Jacksonville, FL, Ashville, Gatliinburg, Atlanta and etc all in a 85min to 4hr 15min drive radius. I always had something to do when I didn't feel like stating in town and none of the drives seemed bad at all.
