I think that’s because after Eddie left, they only had two original members, and nobody came to see Otis.
I feel you. The whole sound of the group changed. When we think of all the classics they had most of the songs that come to mind had them on it. And most of their music doesn’t have them. The replacements could definitely hold their own but imagine Sisqo and Jazz getting replaced. Or K Ci or JoJo. The new dudes might be able to sing just as well but it wouldn’t feel right. That’s why they got a 9 from me

I remember somebody posted something about the O’Jays saying that the light skinned dude who didn’t sing lead acted like the leader of the group. Same applies with Otis and the Temptations, Michael Bivins and New Edition. Probably a few others I’m forgetting right now.

Don’t sleep on Dennis Edwards. He carried that baton into the 70s (Cloud Nine, Runaway Child, Papa Was a Rolling Stone, etc) and sang lead on one of the greatest Christmas songs of all time. After he left though...

No doubt he definitely held it down. I was gonna mention Papa Was A Rolling Stone and Silent Night. But pre Dennis Edwards the Temps defined that Motown sound along with the Supremes.

I disagree about them birthing the J5 unless you wanna go the route of saying they helped make Motown a powerhouse before the J5 was signed
J5 studied the Tempts religiously. Before they were even signed to motown, j5 were recording my girl on Steeltown records and winning talent shows in Gary off of Tempt songs. MJ studied Ruffin tirelessly.
