The University of the District of Columbia could be one of the oldest HBCUs with its first iteration established in 1851 as the Normal School for Colored Girls, a school to produce teachers. For most of the rest of its history until roughly the mid 20th century it remained a college focused on education until it developed into a commuter college. It actually did not have on-campus housing until 2010. It now has two components, the 4-year public college UDC and its community college UDC-CC.

Its status as a commuter college is still prominent since most of its students work full or part-time in addition to attending school and the average age of undergraduates is 27. It does provide many opportunities for motivated students, however, having a full engineering program as well as a law school.

UDC or infamously called university of dumb children is actually a lot better than people give it credit for. Is it Howard? Obviously not but it deserves some more respect.

Edit: President of USA now gets paid 400k in 2022.

the only urban agriculture land grant institution in the usa. 200 acres out in beltsville that is farmed and feeds the community. in 2020 they turned out over 2000lbs of produce.

the student center and main campus is irrigated with stormwater runoff from the ceilings and stuff, there's rooftop gardens irrigated in the same way, lots of water recycling going on there. real opportunity for someone interested in a more affordable sustainability cert/degree

I know many a cat who f'd up early at Howard, UMD & Hampton & life in general who got themselves back right there.

Damn didn’t know they had a nursing school (!), but I do know someone who went there for law school.

Despite it’s negative rep and being overshadowed by Howard and UMD, UDC is still a pretty good school. I attended there briefly and I enjoyed it.

The only negative is that there wasn‘t a lot to do outside of campus.
