We now look at the last HBCU in Arkansas we have not covered, Arkansas Baptist College. A small HBCU, it was founded in 1884 by the Black Baptists of Arkansas as the Minister's Institute to train clergy and provide basic education for Blacks in post-Reconstruction Arkansas. It was long hosted in the Mount Zion Baptist Church until it had its own building in 1900.
The man most responsible for its founding, Rev. Elias Camp Morris, was a close friend and ally of Booker T. Washington and much of the school's early history revolved around whether to establish vocational or liberal arts training. The long time president Joseph A. Booker who served from 1887 to 1926 dominated the early years and growth of the institution.
Arkansas Baptist is probably the least well-known of the schools, especially compared with the well-known Philander Smith. Unfortunately it is also one of two HBCUs currently under monitoring by the Department of Education due to financial issues. It was audited in 2018 and found to have misused federal funds and so was put under monitoring and accreditation probation. It has recently moved off accreditation probation and has new leadership but has seen a drop in enrollment and a fight to survive. Hopefully a revival like Paul Quinn or Claflin University is possible but it is too early to tell.
