Honestly there were a lot different N.Y. "sounds". How one sound came to dominate is a thread into its self.

Basically, what I mean is that during the late 80s his sound along with the bomb squad was the hottest in NYC and other producers at the time were influenced (and followed) them. The sound of Hip hop in NYC changed a lot during the late 80s heading into the 90s.

Marley has a lot of credited/uncredited productions for other artists like LL etc.

During the late 80s, the Bomb Squad sound was what of NY producers we're trying to emulate, then heading into the early 90s Jazz/Boom-Bap (ATCQ, EPMD, early Premier, mid-late BDP) was the trend in productions.

By '93 hip-hop's sound, the sound on east (NYC) changed for the most part following the style of Wu & Black Moon. If you listen to east coast albums released between 92-94 they all have something in common; hard drums with dark jazzy like samples & signature Pete Rock like horns.
