Wait
So are we cool with these ignorant, contrived, faux-ethnic sounding names that some of these parents come up with? Or we just enjoy shytting on Raven when she says something controversial? I'm confused.

We need to learn the difference between an Afrikan name, or name with some other ethnic origin and a name that was obviously a poor attempt at ethnic pride. On one side, I understand its not the kids fault, but at the same time, lets not go so hard in favor of the continued ignorance of some of these names that we are low key promoting that crap. She ain't saying nothing that some of these doctors and nurses don't be thinking as they pull these babies out the womb like :usure:

Whats funny is a lot of these names these parents be making up sound more Greek than Afrikan in origin. Dontraveous or Martavius or anything with an "ius" or "ious" at the end of it. Or anything with a Tre' or La' as the prefix got a French connotation to it. I gotta admit, some of that shyt is creative as hell, but you are instantly putting a stamp on the baby that says "i am black", not that there's anything wrong with being black, but not all black people appreciate the sentiment of a name you created now being identified as a "Black Name".

What does your name have to do with your ability? We know CACs are going to discriminate no matter what, but for a black woman to say that on a television show watched primarily by CACs is just :rudy:. Black people arent shytin on Raven, she shyted on black people.

My point being, black people shouldn't take ownership of those made up names. Only way we're being shyt on is if we are claiming those names as "ours"

Who cares? Rayven don't wanna hire people(black females) with hood names. No different from the office down the street that won't hire Shae Shae with the blue braids in her hair or quita with a million piercings in her face.

On the flip side you gotta look at the parents like :beli: when the come up with these names like Bently or safari for their kids

So I guess we should blame the parents for having black children who check the "African American/Black" box on the application too:childplease:?Guess we should blame black parents who want to give their children African names that ignorant people would consider "ghetto":francis:

That Hollywood lifestyle has killed this c00n Raven like many others, trying to mirror cacs and be as non threatning as you can in order to get jobs since you were a kid must taken its toll:francis:...That or she is just a dike who needs a mans guidance:sas1:

I have heard this line of reasoning before, and it misses the fundamental point. Name based discrimination is not because the names are 'weird' its because the names are a way of identifying the person is black folk. If suddenly all 'ghetto' names go away and all blacks start naming there sons 'John' and whites stop using this name, then in 20 years resumes with the name 'John' on em will get thrown in the 'No' pile.

This is the same reason why many asian americans have their given name and their 'christian' name.
This is the same reason why many migrants take the 'berg' or 'stein' off the ends of there name and anglicize it.

This isnt about 'weird' names, and its not just about black folk... its just plain racism

Why so we can be accepted by the cacs and be patted on the head for having a normal name? Foh.

So I think you guys are missing my overall point. I am all for black folks naming their kids after black leaders or names that are Afrikan in origin. HOWEVER, naming your child Bonquisha or Tradorius or La'Mykeshia is not nor should it EVER be considered the same as naming your child Akeem or N'Khosi or Ayende, so YOU get the fukk out of here @Quiet Magician for dumbing down your response to my post by reaching and assuming I'm saying we should name our kids Anglo or English names.

In the same light, @scuba YOU missed the fundamental point. Comparing an Asian person changing their name from Sook Pow or whatever to Jennifer is reaching. So is comparing a Jewish person changing their sir name suffix to be more Anglo. If anything, I'm with both of you as far as a black person named John changing their name to an Afrikan name. But we're talking about ignorant ass names that we came up with in AMERICA that white people identify us by even though they have NOTHING to do with Afrikan etymology or lineage.. Stop reaching.

:jbhmm: So what makes the names ignorant? Because white people don't like them?

What they are saying is Asian people change their names to be accepted into white society. What we are trying to say is we (minorities) shouldnt have to

wow
So by ignorant, I mean if you make up a name like Tradorius and name your child this as your way of showing black pride not realizing that the root of said name is more Greek than Afrikan in origin. Thats ignorant.

I don't care what white people like and don't like. White people don't claim the name "Bubble" or "Apple" or any of the weird shyt they name their kids, so why should we claim the weird shyt our folks name our kids? We always claiming shyt when its the MOST counterproductive to our progress, WHY??
