Ray Daniels claims J. Cole is a solid rapper but not an exceptional one, and his prominence largely stems from his effective branding.

He acts like Cole was making mainstream type songs. What marketing made him? Cole is like the version of Lupe that didnt become esoteric and closed off.

"J Cole is not incredible. Hov Is incredible."

:ehh:

"Big Sean is incredible."

:dahell::mjlol:

I don't think J Cole is an incredible rapper and I find a lot of his songs to be corny. Maybe I'd rate him just above Sean but he damn sure isn't in the higher tier of MC's like his fans try to suggest. He exposed that with that weak response to Kendrick.

And damn a feature run where are the classic albums?

Cole as a rapper >>>> cole as an artist. It's the reason why most of his 16s on other folks songs/projects over the last decade belong in a museum while he consistently has problems putting together full projects for himself that have more than just witty bars. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that because he's elite at what he's good at and built a fanbase who rocks with it every time he comes out the gate. I consider myself one of those fans, but at this point I know what I'm getting when he drops.

... generational thing . . . .. his name got built on that suburban "its okay to be me" passive-aggressive routine . . .. De La Soul did it better way back when . . . he was marketed similar to Drake when they needed biracial effigies to burn at the altar . . .. Drake was the pop-star . .. . J was the "real hip-hop" avatar. . .. but you can tell from the family flick . .. his white mom favored the "natural" one . . . .. homie looks like his Mom made him carry all the grocery bags inside while the white brother got to go inside and eat candy and hit up the PS1 with no cares in the world . . .. meanwhile . .. . J been scrubbing the kitchen floor with his tooth-brush on her orders . . . .. but still . . .. i dont care to hear about any of that via rap music . . .. . . save that for the cul-de-sac Covid kids that were raised by screens . . that need that Kurt Cobain fake angst . . . .. bunch of male Courtney Love "artists" . . . . .

Who is Ray Daniels?

And please don't answer "big executive responsible for hits" like his website says or "LA Reids assistant", in what way is he responsible for these hits? Who has he worked with or represented?

It seems as if he was just one of very many A&Rs at Epic, but he talks like he was the CEO of Universal Music Group :patrice:
His company manages R. City, who wrote and produced for a bunch of A listers (Beyonce, Rhianna, J-Lo, Miley Cyrus etc)
