Ray Daniels claims J. Cole is a solid rapper but not an exceptional one, and his prominence largely stems from his effective branding.

These conversations get weird as fukk. There are countless threads on here about how J. Cole is a top 5 rapper of all time. Overhyping every song he puts out. Now a semi-famous person is like, "Well....he's not all that" and now folks are jumping on the bandwagon with, "Yeah! Yeah I agree! He ain't all that!"

Same shyt with Drake. Alot of you guys were super fans of this white boy from Toronto for many years. And all it took was a single diss song from Kendrick for you to jump off the bandwagon with, "Pfft...he garbage. Was never a fan".

You guys aren't fans of anything. Just jumping on and off bandwagons, hopping on the latest trends.

His company manages R. City, who wrote and produced for a bunch of A listers (Beyonce, Rhianna, J-Lo, Miley Cyrus etc)
Thanks. So it’s like Rich Paul saying he’s responsible for *list every accolade of every player on Klutch*

Big generalization

I was never a big Cole fan

I liked that one album of his that everyone else hated, but I always thought he was overrated

Facts!

I just said it

"I liked that one album that everyone else hated."

But I never thought he was as good as his fans said he was

Thats not a gotcha! when I just said it

I meant fan in the loosest of terms

Cuz he has songs i like, but I dont like him like I like Rio

And you searched all my posts and only found 1!

that goes for him, kendrick AND drake, but none of their fanbase wants to hear this. This era is so fukking trash that dudes who sing in autotune are considered rappers. It's really that easy to be great as a rapper in an era of non rappers. It's the Dwight Howard effect in how he was the best center in the league for years when there were literally no other good centers in their prime. J Cole is literally a mainstream version of J Live. A dope rapper with dope albums, but nothing he does makes him an all time great. He's just very good at what he does. The thing is that J Cole has a machine behind him. And the machine can convince people that guys like NBA youngboy are great.
Agreed, but J Cole does not have dope albums, at all.

I thought it was Ralph McDaniels you were sh1tting on not Ray Daniels. Ralph the boxmusic video guy all our favorite rappers adore and give credit to pioneering hiphop?

He is right though and also that sentence could be exclaimed on any Rapper who doesn't have an MC name just goes off his birth name like a scared little spoken-word artist.

At least take time to think of a great MC Name before representing your best self to this machismo world :hubie:

Depends on the criteria and in comparison to who in his era.

i.e. Great and popular as Nas was, detractors used to call him boring and say he couldn't pick beats worth a damn; whereas guys like DMX, 50, Kanye were worse rappers than Nas from a technical standpoint but had larger than life personalities that bled into their music, beats, and album structure. That in itself is a brand. They were trendier with higher highs (but also lower lows as time went on) than Nas. I dunno how well Lil Wayne's bars age over time but he also had a larger than life personality at his peak compared to someone like Lupe who was probably better/more consistent technically.

Now, when the "new" generation of sorta backpack/conscious rappers with mainstream aspirations hit the scene 15'ish years ago (KDot, Cole, Krit, Wale, etc.,), i didn't think too much of Krit (or his brand execution/rollout) but i thought the other 3 were very solid with potential to be exceptional, like the new Nas for modern kids. Kendrick basically became that/solidified it with his "ether" moment vs Drake last year, whereas Wale tailored off a while back, and Cole is somewhere between those two; not fallen off but content with his brand as a now lyrical og.

cole is popular because of his skillset
I dont even like him like that but he got his props off of his talent and his talent only his marketing has never been that great.
His corre audience is just true fans and think he is the best thing since sliced bread.

Cole came up at the right moment to feed a big fanbase that needed someone who looked like them

Basically, the Eminem effect

He's not an exceptionnal MC.

I just think it’s amazing how people are still trying to figure out who the “goat” or the “big 3” are out of guys who have been around for 20 years. People always say this era falls short… conversations like this show that this may be true. We were having conversations like this about Jay and Nas and them like 10 years or less into their careers lol. Bruhs be having like 5 plus albums these days and dudes will say “I haven’t seen enough” I used to argue with friends about this hiphop shyt but man it’s got to be annoying AF now :russ: You can be the biggest Cole or Kendrick fan and you know exactly how shot went… then a dude will try to convince you that that rapper didn’t do shyt. Boy hiphop is in trouble:snoop:

Eh…. Kinda hard to have this convo when he pretty much admitted to not listening to any of j Cole features when he went on that run.

Cole has greatly improved as a rapper since fhd.
That’s the album that made me pay attention to him and I think he went on a pretty decent run after that. I kinda liked Born Sinner but not as much as FHD. How do people even Guage who’s great anymore outside of album sales, YouTube numbers, and Spotify listens? Lol
