"Budget talk" = Mixtape middleman language. These hucksters enjoy stereotypical dopeboy manager/artists situations because they can keep eating off of the ignorant. Coast 2 Coast mixtapes = Fraudulent middleman bullshyt. Most of these services people offer are also fraudulent middleman shyt.
The only thing you should be spending $$$ on is mixing (you can learn that on your own), mastering (you can learn that on your own), a PUBLICIST, TRAVEL, and legitimate promotion. Everything else is fraud shyt...from Sony seminars to paying to play in "showcases"...People who throw "showcases" hate free open mics because the fake A&Rs they have fly down to sit in bored while idiots perform aren't getting paid. Nothing's wrong with soundcloud...any music sharing service is good...especially now that most people have smartphones. If you make beats and rap...and you're good to go if you can finesse your way into traveling. shyt, I used to sneak into club backstages and hand out demos or rap for artists...It's about putting yourself in the right place...around the right people...at the right time. The right money is a gamble. If people see money in you, they'll spend theirs on you trying to get more out of you.

Relationships and plugs can push you through more than money.
Yep!

The secret is being able to travel, and hitting spots where people will be willing to listen like college radio or the areas around the colleges. They got money to spend, not all, but enough, and it gets your name out there. The secret is also being liked. Music business is really all about politics. When I was taking it seriously, all I did was know how to relate to different people, and my convo was the proof. It also helped I stayed with the heaven weed, and had the ill style. Most of my help came from the weed smokers, and ladies:myman:

Once you prove you have talent, EVERYONE wants to know you. Either from wanting to just know you, to wanting to fukk you, to wanting to get money off of you. As long as you network with the right people, not be corny with the all in your face shyt, and constantly letting labels know who you are. Now, its way easier because there are so many ways to be heard. Connecting the old ways of hitting the streets to promote, and using creativity with the new technology, you should at least be a little known outside of your area.

I also think that it's 80% luck. We see that it's no longer about talent, no longer really about relationships....however good relationships will keep you employed in some capacity. It's really luck.

But, I think the luck part depends on how big you want to be. If you mean all over tv, millions of youtube views, some blog props, yeah I agree, but if you mean a slow rise, I think its a mix of luck with preparation, and proper execution. What good is luck if you don't know what to do with it?:jbhmm:
