My girl and I are interested in purchasing a smart TV for our house. I have not owned a TV since I was in college over 10+ years ago :flabbynsick:

I would like recommendations on a stand-alone TV (not wall-mounted) that can access multimedia files (mp3 and video files) that can play through the TV's interface. What we have been using for years is a flat-panel monitor with a PC tower set up as a media center. The computer is hooked to the stereo receiver which is also connected to my turntable.

TL;DR - I would like a TV that can run iTunes, stream content through Youtube and Netflix, access a Windows NTFS formatted HDD to play multimedia files, and plug into my stereo system for better sound. If at all possible can I use my iPad as a remote without buying an Apple TV. Is this possible?

You'll get a plethora of options when shopping for a TV, but if those apps are crucial for you, look into the Chromecast. I have 2 Smart TVs but I don't use the apps on them at all.

You'll be able to do everything you want with a Chromecast plugged into any TV you get, whether it's a SMART TV or not. Just food for thought

With what you want no point in you buying a smart tv and you will likely have to purchase a dumb TV with an Apple TV.

my advice is dont get a smart tv... just get a chromecast cause it does eevrything u need and is like 500 bucks less.... i paid like 1000 bucks for my smart tv and was so happy that i could stream shows i downloaded instantly... until i realized nikkas can do that shyt with a 25 dollar chromecast like its nothing...

honestly i dont know how i got tricked into paying literally 500 bucks more for a feature that a 25 buck item can replace

she wants to buy a TV because "i want to be able to turn on the news" :snoop:

we have four laptops, an iPad mini, a desktop with a large flat-panel display with 600+ GBs of music, torrented shows and films, a newspaper that shows up every morning, and three smartphones.

some people really love local news, that and sports are pretty much keeping television alive

You can just keep the set up you have and buy a TV tuner if all she wants is the local news.

We all do.

I'm not saying don't get a new TV or a SMART TV... I'm just saying don't put too much into which apps a TV has over another because you can get all of those apps with cheap alternatives that work great with any TV you get.

You also got a better TV :leostare:

Chromecast is limited as hell well compared to Samsung smart tvs
And you have to use your phone which can get annoying
