If you have a game console or Roku/Apple TV/Chromecast/etc, why would you want a smart TV? Don't most people have these things nowadays?

Do smart TVs get regular updates to its OS and applications?

Smart TVs aren't that great unless they can play every video format out of the box. They are limited as to what apps you can use as well. You want to invest in a box. You want a hardware device that will allow you to use Kodi (used to be called XBMC). Install those fancy addons and you're good to go. Chromecast and all others don't have sh*t on Kodi (XBMC). Smart tv is a big marketing scheme. it's a trap.

TYRONE GA!
My girl and I are interested in purchasing a smart TV for our house. I have not owned a TV since I was in college over 10+ years ago :flabbynsick:

I would like recommendations on a stand-alone TV (not wall-mounted) that can access multimedia files (mp3 and video files) that can play through the TV's interface. What we have been using for years is a flat-panel monitor with a PC tower set up as a media center. The computer is hooked to the stereo receiver which is also connected to my turntable.

TL;DR - I would like a TV that can run iTunes, stream content through Youtube and Netflix, access a Windows NTFS formatted HDD to play multimedia files, and plug into my stereo system for better sound. If at all possible can I use my iPad as a remote without buying an Apple TV. Is this possible?

A smart TV (with DLNA) and a Roku 3 or Chromecast is the way to go.

Roku can do that right? I have apple tv but not the version that can be jailbroken.

Which roku do I need? I went on amazon and see like 4 or 5 different versions.

You are better off buying a not so smart TV, and some type of media streaming box. You can run optical out from your tv for surround sound. You'll save money and the apps included with "smart tv's" are hot garbage:scusthov:
I have Netflix on a 40" Panasonic. It works but the interface is laughably slow

i would not know because i am not familiar with Roku. All i know is that it's good for streaming videos from your pc and play whatever format you throw at it but i have no idea what kind of addons or plugins you can do with Roku. This is why I suggested Kodi (formerly known as XBMC) because you can install plugins that will allow you watch a lot of quality content. It's highly customizable btw. Just do some research. you might wanna check out tvaddons

Yeah I just got introduced to this recently. I have it running on both my iPad and iPhone and was just wondering if I could straight up run it to my tv without streaming through one of my iDevices.

I have two smart tv's, and the only apps we use regularly are netflix and youtube. youtube is dope cuz you can use your phone as a remote to control the app and put it right on the tv.

I would too, but Sony's tvs are usually a lot more.

I think Samsung and LG are the best of the mid tier tvs when it comes to over all package (abilities, design, and pic quality)

-DMP-

I really fukks with samsung I think I'm going to equip my man den with a Sammy tv.
