Reddit Is Done Pretending The Donald Is Fine

Reddit is banning one of its most notorious communities today, the subreddit—or forum—dedicated to discussion of President Donald Trump.

The ban comes after years of controversy around r/The_Donald and its promotion of racism, anti-Semitism, conspiracy theories, and violent memes starring a cartoon frog. Reddit is also removing 2,000 other communities today, including the 160,000-member subreddit associated with the popular left-wing podcast Chapo Trap House. And alongside the purge, Reddit is debuting an updated content policy that is significantly more detailed than its previous list of rules—a change that was promised three weeks ago in response to conversations about Black Lives Matter.

The new policy’s preamble states in part that “no community should be used as a weapon,” and that users should not “interfere” with communities they are not a member of—a reference to the long-standing tradition of “brigading,” or coordinated trolling. r/The_Donald, which had 790,000 members at the time of the ban

How you gonna ROFL with a hollow back?
Though I’m very happy that they are going this, it’s way too little too late, they gave them a warning, and they knew it was coming, basically they have had almost a year to organize. I didn’t check the list yet, but if the r/conspiracy mods aren’t shytcanned, they need to ban the whole sub, it’s tdv2

The only issue I have with this is this:

We're about to circle back around to White Nationalist Domestic Terrorism being a thing in this country again. It's coming. The Unibomber, Timothy McVeigh type shyt. Angry White men who believe that either the government is plotting against them or that they're "losing" the country.

Places like reddit and ***** make them easier to congregate....but it also makes them easier to spot and easier to figure out

They're gonna go back into the shadows now...which will require the Feds that watch them to engage in the same government surveillance that we don't like...

Think that's going to happen regardless... normalizing them is arguably worse and they're actively recruiting people(more people) by allowing it to be mainstreamed

You're right

Making places for them to gather IS a problem...but if they're not gathering in plain sight, they're gathering in secret....which many of them are anyways but...it's still making me worry that their little movements can now bubble in secret

Federal investigators have a lot of sources, and often glean more intelligence from confidential sources, witnesses, and informants, than by trolling websites. Many of the latest higher profile cases have involved those elements, concerning white and other forms of terrorism.

I think making it less accessible is a benefit. Make them have to do shyt outside of their comfort zone and they'll get caught. Also treating white supremacists like the actual threat that they are to society will have an impact instead of protecting them like this administration has. These far right groups are bigger danger and have more bodies than Islamic extremist groups it's time to give it the attention it deserves.
