Notes from Ohio State offense
+ Lettermen Row sources indicated that Saturday was a ‘solid’ day for the quarterbacks, who both still make the mistakes you’d expect from young quarterbacks at times. Yes, sources indicated that Julian Sayin is leading the battle. No word on when a starter could be announced. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day speaks to the media on Monday.
+ One name Lettermen Row heard coming out of the scrimmage: CJ Donaldson. We’ve been talking about him as the potential starter, and he had a good day. Of course James Peoples was involved, as well. And sources indicated that Bo Jackson had a good day.
+ As for the receivers, they are elite — as expected. Brandon Inniss was named a captain Saturday after a good scrimmage. Lettermen Row believes he could be a problem.
+ The offensive line starters “have came together really well this camp” and had a good day in the trenches, especially in the run game. Both Ethan Onianwa and Phillip Daniels had shining moments. That battle continues ahead of a final few days of camp before Texas prep.
About the Buckeyes defense…
+ First, let’s start with Matt Patricia, who a source referred to as “a wizard.” This defense may not be as experienced as last year, but the growing sentiment is that this group could be extremely good for the Buckeyes.
+ Building off what Lettermen Row said above about the offensive line, we asked if that was a bad sign for the interior defensive line and received good feedback. “It was good play from the OL” more than it was poor from the defensive line. That’s a positive sign as the defensive tackles continue building depth during camp.
+ The defensive end group of Kenyatta Jackson, CJ Hicks, Caden Curry and Beau Atkinson was good during Saturday’s scrimmage. That builds off a strong camp overall from the defensive end group.
+ This is more about camp overall than the second scrimmage, but Jaylen McClain is a name that keeps coming up at safety this month. The media will meet with the safeties this week, so McClain will be a big topic to cover there.
+ As for special teams, the punter battle is still ongoing. Lettermen Row believes it’ll be tough for the Buckeyes to bench Joe McGuire, who has improved and hasn’t done wrong to deserve a demotion. But Nick McLarty is truly pushing for the job. That competition is not settled.
From bucknutsSecond scrimmage update
I think our secondary will be better than last year. 3rd year Downs and 4th year IGB will improve from last year. Matthews will be better than Burke. And there’s a lot of optimism with McClain and Hartford that I don’t think there will be a big drop off from Ransom. Plus you add Sanchez and Aaron Scott rotating in, along with Bryce West, man we’re loaded (pause) in the secondary. The buzz continues to grow around Ohio Statetrue freshman cornerback Devin Sanchez. But don't take our word for it. Just listen to what his teammates and coaches say about the No. 1 corner recruit in the country from the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.
"Devin Sanchez, he don't move like a freshman," senior cornerback Davison Igbinosun said after Tuesday's practice. "He don't move like a freshman corner. He seems very like, ready."
Igbinosun believes Sanchez will make an immediate impact in what is a very talented OSU secondary.
"I do, yes," Igbinosun said. "So, you know how you see young corners come in and they're kind of like floating and sinking; like trying to find their way? I don't see that with Devin Sanchez. He seems poised for the big-time moments."
The leader of the secondary is junior safety Caleb Downs, who knows something about playing right away as a true freshman. He was Alabama's leading tackler in 2023 with 107 stops (70 solo) and was named the SEC's Freshman of the Year. Downs is very serious about football and does not throw around compliments lightly. But he's been impressed with Sanchez.
"He's extremely talented and he's progressed a lot since the spring," Downs said. "And I know he's going to do what he's supposed to do when he gets his chance."

Secondary coach/co-defensive coordinator Tim Walton recruited Sanchez, so he's not surprised that the Houston-area native is turning heads. On Tuesday, Walton explained what he has been preaching to the 6-foot-2, 198-pound Sanchez the most.
"Work hard, focus on the details, learn the game," Walton said. "When you get in the game, there's a lot of stuff thrown at you. So, we always focus on technique, fundamentals, understanding the game, doing the little things right. So, that's the only thing I focus on right now with him. We're still a young group, so I like to make sure I emphasize that. And that's my only focus with Devin right now.
"And that's with all the young guys, you know what I mean? We have to make sure we're good at fundamental football. So, that's the main emphasis right now, getting better every day at the little things."
Walton is not going to make any grand proclamations about a true freshman cornerback who has not yet played a collegiate game. But you can tell he's very excited about Sanchez, who will wear the No. 6 for the Buckeyes this season.
"He's been here, he's had a chance to go through the offseason program and go through spring ball," Walton said. "He had a chance to understand the defense and physically is maturing a little bit and getting adjusted to college life. So, he's taking a big step forward in that aspect."
