I don't think regents were exit exams but you did have to pass them.

I graduated in the midwest, all you had to do was pass your classes for 4 years. That's it. It might be different now because some cats were just slidin by and community college enrollment for like Algebra and such is through the roof.

States with higher standards of education have these. Its a statewide exam to make sure no one is just getting passed to get them outta school. Rich kids and poor kids get the same test. Urban schools typically have lower pass rates.
