He was never going to sign from out his own mouth. He was about to be a free agent and murder inc saw an opportunity to stop their free fall from the game by trying to align themselves with Nas. Speculate away tho

i felt it was going to be more irv gotti executive producing nas album but i am glad it didn't happen :yeshrug:
why would nas leave a major to go to a boutique label? Nas was playing games with people. But it was fair game because those people were running around with guys who took shots at Nas.

To me that shyt almost always seem like Irv Gotti getting more gassed than Nas. I think Nas appreciated them as friends hollering at him after his Mom's passing and all that energy from the beef increasing with Jay getting State Prop to do freestyles at him after Nas came on radio and said he pretty much was done with the beef after Ether. shyt culiminated with the Summer Jam stuff and I think he was just in F U mode and Gotti sort of came to him to give him dap and say he got his back and Nas was cool with doing a song and all but I dont think there was ever really a plan on Nas part to sign to INC or have Gotti there working with him. He kind of addressed slightly on GOD and that was it.
Remember though at this point Irv was doing what 50 in 2005 did and what YMCMB has done the last couple of years and tried to expand the stable of the INC Death Row style (Signed Bobby Brown too) and he was talking about wanting to sign Nas as early as April of that year in XXL. But I just dont think there was any plans at least from Nas' side, though Im sure Irv tried to put something together.

executive producing is just fancy A & Ring and producing on your album, securing guest , getting samples cleared etc.

Jay-z executive prod lupe debut who was on Atlantic
