Their video quality even on DirecTV/Dish Network/Primestar (remember them?) back in the day was damn near bootleg quality. shyt had a bonus effect of making videos look way more raw and gritty.

Even when it was black owned, we still complained that there was too much music and not enough educational programming and no body watched bet news.

Shiiiiiiiit.

When Bob Johnson fired Tavis Smiley, all hell broke loose.

People were so mad that Bob Johnson had to come on Ed Gordon's show and explain himself

VH1 went from targeting one demographic extreme(Old white men) to targeting another demographical extreme(Young adult black women). I've never seen a channel shift comparable to VH1 in my life. And it's crazy how smooth it happened. I remember as a child watching those old 60's, 70's and 80's videos. Songs from groups like the Monkees all the way to 80's hair metal like Guns N Roses. I remember shows like Pop-Up Video. Then nostalgia driven shows like I Love The 90's. And then in the mid-00's they started showing Reality TV. Surreal Life, Flavor of Love, then Rock Of Love. So even with the reality TV, they still had cac-oriented reality TV. And I remember the adult contemporary countdowns. But then towards the late-00's they started showing the basketball wives/love and hip hop kinda shows and it was a wrap. They saw how many folks tuned in for the ratchetness, so they went full throttle with the shift. But I didn't notice the shift until after it happened. So it felt seemless. Til this day, I can't think of another channel with that sort of demographical shift.

:ohhh:

Yup, and I talked about why that happened in my old thread

https://www.thecoli.com/threads/real-talk-viacom-straight-played-black-folks.529704/

Black folks got so up and arms all those years about hating BET for all of it's ratchet ass programming.

All Viacom did was just put all of their boring programs on BET and put all the ratchet shyt on VH1:russ:

Just turn on that motherfukker. If "Black Ink Club", "Love & Hip-Hop" & "Basketball Wives" and all those ratchet ass spinoff shows were on BET, motherfukkers would be about to riot, but they just put those shows a few channels down and damn near nobody says shyt.

So, now they can look clean for having BET have shyt like Gabby Union's "Mary Jane" show and other shyt about upwardly mobile Black folks and now all the ratchet shyt is still on the air but just on another one of their networks.

The devil is a motherfukker.:jbhmm:

What is BET even like now?

I live on a different continent now and don't get the channel.

Still Tyler Perry movie marathons?

Pretty much and old episodes of The Fresh Prince, Martin, and The Parkers.

True, but why do you think that is? Could there be another BET someday?

Not in the same way. A lot of the strength of BET's entertainment was a LOT of R&B, rap, and reggae got exposure there they couldn't get on MTV. Except for pop idols like MJ, Whitney, etc. MTV didn't show too much outside of Yo MTV Raps!. I saw the first videos from the Wu, Jay Z, and others on BET before anyone gave them a chance.

Hip hop is the mainstream now and Youtube exists so like others said, videos will do nothing.

I think if a Youtube channel with global Black news (US, Caribbean/Latin America, Africa, Europe, etc.) debuted it could get a good following but not sure how profitable. The only other thing I can think of is a production house that funds a lot of Black TV/movie productions but Tyler Perry is already moving in that direction a bit.

As corny, and somewhat disturbing, as it may sound, if they could find a way to monetize these Black IG models, maybe that would appeal to the current generation.

This thread brings back memories. I'm trying really hard to remember the last time I watched BET. I'm thinking probably 2012 or 2013. The last show I remembered watching was that Real Husbands of Hollywood showing starring Kevin Hart.

I had a bunch of Freestyle Fridays, Rap City basement freestyles, Hits from the Street, Hell Date, and Comic View episodes recorded on VHS. I left them at my mom's house when I moved to Houston but I was going to eventually convert them to DVD. When my mom moved she threw all those tapes away! :mjtf:

Yeah when RHOH and The Game was on, it was the last time I watched BET with interest. RHOH was legit funny imo.

I remember those 2000s shows too like Hell Date, Baldwin Hills, College Hill etc.

I'm kinda jealous of all the people that watched Rap City when Tigger was on there, I grew up watching Q45 :pachaha:.
