Remember when anime was a relatively niche/nerd thing?

I remember reading fan "scanlations" of a lot of mangas because official/licensed releases for them didn't exist. nikkas was in the trenches reading the same chapter multiple times from different fan "scanlations" groups because there would be slight differences in the translations that could add an entirely different context to a scene/chapter :wow:

I was reading Naruto scanlations when the first chapter dropped in Shonen Jump. The site everyone went to was Toriyama World. They had Death Note on there too. I think they eventually had to stop the scanlations because of of copyrights but the message board still went on.

I kinda don't respect these new jacks who didn't come up in that era. I'm happy it's easily accessible but they don't know what it was like. We got it out the mud in those days. I read Naruto for like 15 years:wow:

People were hurt when it was a Japanese holiday and you didn't get a chapter that week.

Ironically, the internet felt "better" then. People were just sharing stuff. Putting in hard work to get hold of the chapters, scanning it, translating and sharing stuff just for the love - no thoughts to monetization or anything. There were also so many pirate anime websites with big libraries that you could just go to and watch shyt.

Funny that you mention watching sports anime with your nephew. My nephew got into soccer because of Blue Lock :russ:

We first watched Kuroko no Basuke because he was playing basketball. I was telling him he needed to learn all the special abilities they were doing. I'd call him and ask if he mastered Vanishing Drive. He'd say no so I said he had to start his training arc:mjlol:

Next time I visited we watched Blue Lock season 1 together.

I grew up watching Robotech/Macross..whats the big deal :gucci:

The thread is about the remarkable and exponential growth of anime and how it’s one of the fastest growing entertainment sectors. It went from niche subculture to being a the forefront of current pop culture.

I’m sure you enjoyed your time with robotech - this thread wasn’t attempting to invalidate that

I know all that, I just hate people privileged enough to have experienced something nice and now trying to act as self appointed security guards gatekeeping something from fukking Japan..getting upset they saw other less deserving kids watching an anime.
I know very well how that attitude exists so maybe I was coming from there.

But nothing of what you said has anything to do with this thread though? The thread is literally about the growth of anime market value with quotes and projections from financial outlets - and a video from a 40 year old Hollywood actor in his prime professing their love for anime to corroborate its place in pop culture. Also, there’s a mention to an in-house Coli breh that made their own animated series “Black Sands” that could be capitalizing big in the current market

Not a single soul in this thread said anything about gatekeeping - in fact, the thread quickly morphed into doing the exact opposite and providing recommendations to another breh that asked.

It is of the utmost importance to not turn into Don Quixote, breh

Like I said, I approached it opposing the traditional coli disposition on anime, which is to want to gate keep it.
Good if that's not the case anymore.
