That was before knowing that the shooter was a white man with republican ties and maga parents. Only Trump supporters felt sorry for him everyone else see it as a consequence of his rethoric.
It was a bad take, and they saw a goofy young white cat and assumed he was a leftist. They buried not only the shooting in terms of importance, but they stopped mentioning the shooter.
