I enjoyed most of the records that he recorded on Tha Row and I've always fukked with Petey Pablo in general since he first dropped. Underrated as a lyricist in my opinion. Not saying he's a top 10 Bar-barian but he has a unique style and a knack for storytelling.

The thing with Petey could've worked, but he came off as a gimmicky, club/crunk rapper. Some saw him as a Mystikal biter. There was much more to Petey than "Raise Up" or "Freek A Leek" showcased. There was a soulful, confessional side to Petey where he rapped with conviction. Those songs were marred with sub par or medicore production where his singles were top notch production wise.

Between Hammer, Left Eye and Petey..who knows wtf was going on in Suges head during those moments..

He signed 2 has beens and a one hit wonder...

Suge did all that too keep up an image. It worked for a minute but as years went by and no music that anyone cared for the gimmick was exposed.
Harry O was right....Dre was the brains behind the music and without Dre Death Row would collapse.

True. However, no Dre also meant no backing by the machine. The
machine behind Death Row had gone by the time Dre left really, which was
right after All Eyez On Me..

I think we all knew it was a wrap when he tried to add Hammer of all people to the label.

Almost all of Suges signings were random as hell. Poor choices. He signed the Realest who was a Pac impersonator too.

When Dre was at Death Row, he was the one bringing in the talent, not Suge. Suge got exec producer credits on those albums but he had nothing to do with them musically.

Even back on the murder was the case soundtrack, there was like the last song or so on the album that was probably the worst song to ever come out on the imprint at the time...pretty sure I remember that those guys were Suge’s homies and he put them on there. It was a garbage track that stuck out like a sore thumb on an otherwise classic soundtrack.

I agree, but that was largely due to Hammer being involved in a lot of charities and community initiatives. It probably got Suge some write offs and positive press. But Hammer trying to be thugged out didn’t really work.

A lot of the signings during “tha row” era were bad, because of the drop off in quality. Crooked I is the only one on that roster who could fit in with that roster from the 90s and not look out of place.

Part of Deathrows appeal is that they had high level producers and rappers.

Every time I see Petey's name in print, I start cracking up laughing.

Back when Raise Up was a hit for him, he did a show at a club at South Of The Border on the NC/SC state line. Dude was performing all kinds of songs except Raise Up. Some guys started getting impatient because they paid to hear Raise Up. Why did this dude have to get smart on the microphone with them? Next thing you know, Craig, Earl, Junior "Lum(bee)" & Lil' T had Peter up in the air "swinging 'round like a helicopter". I've never send a dude get their ass kicked so fast in my life.
