Nah. Black people rejected him because he wasn't "hard enough" and "too clean" which by default made him "corny" because we're so damn ass backwards and ignorant with the shyt we enable, celebrate and cheer on. Black people even let Eminem get away with shytting on him multiple times.

Will should have always been embraced. He was only embraced during his TV show days. Now he's been embraced due to his movies, but that doesn't mean anything these days.

Speak for yourself.

Maybe some nikkas around you felt that way but not all Black people did. Will has certified classics like Summertime which is an absolute staple, don’t matter from the hoodest of nikkas to the squarest of squares in the African American community, that shyts a classic. Big Willie Style just went a little “pop-ish” but I have never saw anyone question Will or disown him as you are speaking.

I saw him as an actor who was trying to rap on the side. Similiar to Shaq a ball player who tried rap on the side.

I think this depends on your age, I’d you’re in your mid 30s and earlier your first introduction to Will was Fresh Prince of BelAir and not Parents Just Don’t Understand. So from our frame of reference he was always an actor.

Will smith was so famous at this time that nothing he did was considered corny, you see Eve in the video, she was the queen of Ruff Ryders when this dropped
I won’t say corny but some people did find him cheesy in that era. I liked him too but I’m not going to act like it wasn’t a whole bunch of white people trying to get jiggy with it

For me... Will had always been a rapper who tried acting on the side and ended up over-achieving compared to his peers who have done the same (LL Cool J, Tupac, DMX, 50 Cent, Common). Ice Cube is the only one whose success comes close. The other rappers who gave Hollywood a shot seem to have mostly only done one film or two like Nas and Eminem.

There's only a few rappers who started in the film industry first and the actor who is the most prominent in this regard is Drake.

He was cheesy. I fukks with some of his catalog but Will was making music aimed at a pop crowd. Miami, Will 2K, Getting Jiggy Wit it is not music for the hood or the streets to blast to. He sold records and kept a fan base so it worked out but he also made choreographed videos to the Wild West and Men in Black which enhanced the cheesiness. And I hate this angle that we are automatically supposed to love his catalog cuz he didn't curse but neither did Rakim and a gang of 80s nikkas.

Im 32 and I'm not gonna come in here on some revisionist bullshyt but when I was a kid I saw Will first and foremost as an actor that released some music and soundtracks to his movies. Of course now I know better but then I was was 10-12 years old that was that.

Remember an old interview with RA The Rugged Man who gave Will huge props where he said back in the day Will could slide up to any radio show and destroy any mic
