Thought it was weird I couldn't find an official 9/11 thread in HL.

The names of those lost in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 will be read aloud Wednesday morning at a ceremony in lower Manhattan, where 12 years ago today the Twin Towers collapsed.

Nearly 3,000 people perished that day, as two hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center in New York, another plane hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and another crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

In keeping with the tradition set last year by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who chairs the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum, no politicians will speak at Wednesday's ceremony. Only the loved ones of those who died will take their turn at the podium.

The ceremony begins at 8:39 a.m.in 9/11 Memorial plaza, under the shadow of One World Trade Center, which earlier this year became New York City's tallest building.

A moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m. to commemorate the moment Flight 11 struck the North Tower.

Still remember what class I was in and what period it was when the principal told us over the loud speaker that something happened at the WTC and that she would keep us informed throughout the day. She never got back on the loudspeaker but we found out as soon as class ended what happened because you had teachers in the hallway crying.

A mothers fight to have her son remembered in the right light

In the months that followed, in addition to uncertainty about Salman, our family had to endure suspicion pointed at him. Before anyone knew where he was, a flyer circulated around the city, saying that my son was wanted for questioning. And the New York Post ran a story with Salman's photo and this hateful headline: "Missing -- Or Hiding?"

It wasn't until late March that the police told us that Salman's remains had been found beneath the pile -- in 34 pieces. Ultimately, what we would get to bury was nothing more than a body bag filled with all that was left of our son.

At Salman's funeral, the many mourners included Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and our congressman, Gary Ackerman. The Patriot Act, enacted in response to the terror attacks, specifically refers to Salman as a 9/11 hero. Yet, at the 9/11 Memorial, his name is grouped among the miscellaneous victims, not among the first responders who sacrificed their lives, where it belongs.

I remember being in 4th grade when it happened. I had trouble sleeping for like the next two weeks, because I feared the U.S. was still under attack.

shyt is crazy, because as a youngster, I questioned how any one could hate "this great nation of ours" but as I get older some things become more apparent...

I'm actually surprised more hasn't happened ( no NSA)
