He still had to deal with royalties though pertaining to the copyright owners of the song. Do you know has a songwriting credit and claim for Shake it Off? Mariah Carey herself. Parody or not, they’re still going to have to negotiate the royalties from whatever they make from the song with the people who wrote it.

People always tend to forget that Mariah has along of songwriting credits with a lot of her music.
I’m not sure about how the royalties get split, but I know with parody, you can monetize without permission.

You can monetize without permission, but you still have pay out royalties in that situation. In this case, Mariah Carey has a songwriting credit, so they will end up having to pay her either way.

It should also be noted that parodies involve humor and there is none of that whatsoever in the song. So that excuse just isn’t going to fly.

Completely agree this isn’t parody.

There's a huge difference between artist interpretation and just flat out biting, with the latter being a cardinal sin of hip hop since its inception.

In her defense, she seems to be giving them the opportunity demonetize it before she steps in with an actual lawsuit. Don’t necessarily blame her though as I wouldn’t want a song of mine being used in that way.

Son hip hop for real

Ngl I’ve been vibing with son. This is good marketing for real because now I’m actually going thru his tracks and I’ve been feeling everything I ran across.
Reminds me of a more lyrical Isaiah rashad.

now that let it off song is really a claim for a parody.
