During THAT period it was Nas/Hov mano-e-mano. Once Jigga dropped Supaugly and the shyt didn't dent Nas at all (it actually backfired on Hov) you got Beans and State Prop and other Roc artists throwing shots. Nas also threw shots through the Bravehearts ("You already know who I'm better than") and so on and so forth
Nas/Cam became a Dipset/Braveheart battle because Cam brought Dipset into it from the START. Jim Jones/Juelz and company went STRAIGHT at Nas. Nashawn, Jungle, and Wiz acted in kind. We still got the classic Kufi Smacking and Soul Clap soundbites out of it regardless
Now let's say Remy and Nicki go at it. It's Nicki's responsibility to reply DIRECTLY to Remy first. Without calling back up. You only call for backup when the whole crew goes at you (I.e Dipset as a collective going at Nas) Now if Nicki and Remy go at it and Nicki is pressed and on the ropes, should Wayne and Drake step in? That would be touchy because it would look like Nicki couldn't handle Remy on her own, especially when her Top Dog Joey Crack just said he's staying out of it.
There's a lot of chess moves to properly handled rap beef. Just the fact that you and me are debating these merits is really a testament to Hip Hop as a culture and I love this shyt.
