Time is gonna hate on Jeezy hard.
You know how people look at Soulja Boy as being the death of hip hop? That's how I look at Jeezy. When he came out with Thug Motivation, I had never heard someone so wack. I was genuinely puzzled like: "nikkaz like this shyt? these poppy beats and trash raps?" I know it sounds weird to say 'poppy' but honestly that was my impression. It was like ghetto pop. Childishly glossy beats that didn't have much groove to them, mixed with lazy "I'm a hustler" raps.
Anyway, Jeezy's got a punch of those repeat-bar rhymes. It was the style among dull "street" rappers back then.
I never thought of the beats as poppy but I can see how you came to that. I think that his rhymes were standard. Back when 50 got hot, I use to think his rhymes were okay too but my dad brought something to my attention. It's not just rhymes and beats. It's voice too. Jeezy has a different voice. Most famous rappers, seem to have a standout voice. You can point them out. A lot of local rappers that dont make it, dont have a unique sounding voice. Think how getting shot changed 50's voice from his early work. Same with Kanye and the wreck. Through the Wire with the messed up voice is a good song but Ye has been way more successful with his current voice.
My favorite example of this is Wayne
