Official says gangs killed dozens in small fishing village in Haiti’s latest massacre

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Dozens of people were killed in a fishing village north of Haiti’s capital in the latest massacre carried out by powerful gangs in the troubled Caribbean country, an official said Friday.
At least 42 people were killed in Labodrie, including a 4-year-old child and his family, said Joseph Louis Baptiste, a local government official.

He told Radio Caraïbes that the killings began over the weekend and are ongoing.
“This tragedy highlights the urgent need for effective state intervention to end impunity and restore security in the region,” he said.
Baptiste said gangs set Labodrie on fire and are now trying to attack the nearby town of Arcahaie, with police and a local vigilante group trying to hold them back.

Baptiste said the massacre apparently was provoked by the killing of a local gang leader in Cabaret who goes by the name of Vladimir. He was a member of a powerful gang coalition known as Viv Ansanm that has plundered several communities in Port-au-Prince and beyond and was recently designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S.

Baptiste called on police to help protect people in Labodrie and Arcahaie.

Lionel Lazarre, a deputy spokesman for Haiti’s National Police, did not immediately return a message for comment.
The department is understaffed and underfunded and is struggling to quell gang violence despite help from a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police.

Gangs previously attacked Arcahaie in October last year, wounding multiple people and setting fire to homes.
Gang violence used to be concentrated in Port-au-Prince but in recent years has spread to once peaceful communities outside of the capital.
Earlier this month, the U.S. and Panama said they supported transforming the current multinational force into a 5,550-member force with the power to detain and arrest suspected gang members

The UN Security Council has backed a resolution authorising the transition of the Kenyan-led support mission for Haiti into a new Gang Suppression Force, in close cooperation with Haitian authorities. US Ambassador Michael Waltz said it offered new hope for the country's future as “a key first step” to address the humanitarian and security crisis there.

We do not have the capacity to stop it. And it will eventually spread to the other parts of the country if left unchecked.

DHS ends family reunification parole programs for Colombia, Cuba, Haiti and more

The Department of Homeland Security said Friday that it was terminating “all categorical family reunification parole programs for aliens from Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras, and their immediate family members.”

The Department of Homeland Security said Friday that it was terminating "all categorical family reunification parole programs for aliens from Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, and Honduras, and their immediate family members."
These FRP programs allowed "beneficiaries of approved I-130 petitions in the family-based preference categories to be paroled in the United States rather than waiting and proceeding through the immigrant visa process," according to the nonprofit Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc.

Now, if a person's parole has not expired on Jan. 14, 2026, it will terminate on that date and they should leave before then, DHS said.
"This administration is ending the abuse of humanitarian parole which allowed poorly vetted aliens to circumvent the traditional parole process. Parole was never intended to be used in this way, and DHS is returning parole to a case-by-case basis as intended by Congress. Ending the FRP programs is a necessary return to common-sense policies and a return to America First," a statement reads in part.
Employment authorization would also be revoked.
Exceptions include:
In that case, their parole would remain valid until it expires or if DHS makes a final decision on the pending Form I-485.

"If we deny their Form I-485, their period of parole will be terminated, and they should depart the United States immediately," the statement reads
