Even outside of politics, it's depressing that some of the most powerful people on the planet, who make important decisions about the future of the country (and world) are this dumb. :sadcam:

I mean, even when I was like an eight-year old I could've told you that Mars is obviously further away from the sun than earth and much colder.
Why would people making decisions for the country be smart?? :rudy: Thats not how they consistently win elections :russ: We like to elect people we can have a beer with.

how does the different time of arrival for the rays lead to varying temperatures? given the curvature of the earth what would you say is the discrepancy in time of arrival of said rays?
oh i wrote that poorly.. its not the time of the arrival of the rays.. its the angle of the earth.. when the angle is tilted due to the wobble, the atmosphere allows more energy in from the sun rays without letting it dissipate, resulting in a concentrated summer heat.. so it depends on the angle not the distance

so does this mean it's not the atmosphere that controls the temperature but the sunrays angle of incidence?

interesting suggestion.. you're right the atmosphere doesnt control.. but the heat without atmosphere would dissipate so it does have a larger role than position in accordance to the sun, and an equally important role as the angle depending on which way you look at it

Heat can't dissipate in a vacuum, as it is defined as the average speed/kinetic energy of molecules
the atmosphere, according to your own deliberations, is subject to temperature which is subject to our relation to the sun, so how do you reconcile your last claim that the atmosphere has a larger role than the sun?

because the temperature isnt in relation to the distance, that has been established hence why winter time the sun is closer to the northern hem.. then if there was no atmosphere the heat would kill everything on the planet.. so therefore the atmosphere and angles are more important than the distance.. this goes someway to explaining why mars had a similar atmosphere if it was further than earth

You seem to have moved the goal post. Which is more important the angle to the sun or the atmosphere
atmosphere. In fact does not one of these depend on the other?

Well yeah we've come to the same conclusion.. the only thing i refuted was that distance has an affect on planetary temperature when its not that simple.. but then i fukked up by sayin the heat dissapates if theres no atmosphere
:snoop:

it actually burns everything but you knew that.. so that brings us back to the two things that determine planetary temperature..

so it does have a larger role than position in accordance to the sun, and an equally important role as the angle depending on which way you look at it

My point is that "atmosphere" is just a result of the energy/heat/ temperature received from the sun and not the other way around. Atmosphere is essentially a passive medium, it is not the cause of anything
