Police say they've apprehended a suspect in a shooting that claimed the life of a rapper and another man in a Montgomery bar over the weekend. Six others were wounded by gunfire.
Montgomery police on Monday announced the arrest of 25-year-old Jason Quan McWilliams of Montgomery. Police say he turned himself in to detectives late Sunday evening and was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Detention Facility. He faces two counts of capital murder, jail records show. The jail records do not indicate whether he has an attorney.
City officials closed the Centennial Bar and Grill after rapper Glenn Thomas, 22, known as Doe B.; and Kimberle Johnson, a 22-year-old Troy University student, were fatally shot early Saturday.
Police said in a statement that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute involving the rapper.
"The circumstances surrounding the shooting were initially unknown, but further investigation indicates that the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between McWilliams and Thomas," police said in a statement Monday.
The six other people injured were hospitalized in stable condition.
After the shooting, the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board suspended the business' liquor license and Mayor Todd Strange said the city was closing the business immediately.
"I believe it is not a matter of 'if,' but 'when' the next tragic incident occurs at this business," Strange said in a statement. "That is unacceptable, and that is why we have ordered the business to be closed effective immediately."
The owner of the business says she doesn't plan to reopen it.
The killings are Montgomery's 47th and 48th homicides of 2013.
