I am really probably the biggest Nas fan in the world, but I thought that album was super light. Ghetto Prisoners has an awful beat. We Will Survive is average. Small World is cool but it's nothing crazy. Not to mention the 2 or 3 other trash songs on here. Mainly it was the weak production that I wasn't rockin with. That shyt with DMX should have been so much better but the beat was light.

Dope to me :yeshrug:

Lol there are no ties in hip-hop. Yall just dont wanna admit Jay didnt run shyt.

The term "ran rap" implies that rap revolved around an individual artist... I don't care how much people like to push these little ideas about one person being the only show in town, shyt didn't happen in none of them eras y'all talk about.

And if we talkin' about '99, I'd say Jay ran it way before I say Em did. I could give Em 2000, but in '99 he had "My Name Is" and two other singles that did little to nothing. That "take over" was definitely not in effect yet.

Example "Nas I Am album was trash, everybody hated it"

Yet it got 4 and a half mics

Wait was this rating for the bootleg or actual album. I remember Murder Music getting a bunch of reviews around the bootleg and for some reason I thought I Am did too. I just didn't know which one The Source used.

Know what's revisionist... when people say "if such-and-such was still here, these trash ass rappers wouldn't even be signed".

Like trash nikkas weren't gettin' signed when they were alive.

Like we know for sure if they'd still be popular today anyway.

Like one artist's presence is gonna dictate the fate of a whole industry.

Like some of the greatest rappers ever ain't still alive and there's still trash nikkas makin' hits.

SSLP sold more than Vol. 3. Even if I disregarded Em in 99 there's still Dre and then DMX pushing 700k first week. Jay was always 2nd or 3rd never number 1

It's more than just sales though. Eminem was the new kid on the block. Dre wasn't really revered so much for his rapping as much as his beats. During that era, you pretty much had Jay Z vs. X. And that's pretty much what @DANJ! is getting at. No one rapper ever occupied the top spot alone.

People saying Murda Muzik wasn’t a classic when it dropped

that jawn was just aiird.

I don't understand the internet's infactuation with this album.

There is no revision in getting a "legacy bump". Revision is someone saying "OutKast ran rap in 1994" or "UGK was widely considered GOAT when Ridin Dirty dropped" or "Three Six Mafia were household names once they dropped Mystic Stylez".

you don't get it.

im not gonna hi-jack the thread tho.
