Cole got that sort of fanbase that will buy several copies at a time because they want him to win.
Coles fans probably still get allowance or have a paper route/pizza delivery job listening to Cole to help get them through their studying/mundane jobs because.. if a magnolia average joe like Cole can make it, they can to.

Ross lucky his fanbase even buys one.
not one to comment on sales like that but when i read them, i'm always quite surprised at how well Jeezy/Ross do with their albums as i would assume a massive chunk of their fanbase couldn't give a fukk about buying a copy.

That Pharrell album was a pure moneygrab. It comes across as a rough draft of a couple studio sessions.

The record label probably pushed him or cut him a deal to get music out in this time period when he'd be in the mainstream news (NBA All Star Game/Academy awards performance).

Wasn't expecting that low numbers for Pharrell's album. It speaks about the fan base imo. Mainstream America isn't gonna eat that up compared to the urban fan base opening week as you can see with Rozay. Katy Perry, Miley, etc. are the types of artists the mainstream will support first week. Male Black artist who's album is dedicated to females already cuts the numbers down.

These days a female dropping an album singing about women stuff = #'s. Male singing/simping about females not so much. If dude dropped an album with more diverse topics, I can see it being more accepted.

That said dude needs to drop Lost Queen part one. Based of the strength of those adlibs alone would make for a great follow-up to Happy and keep/build momentum.

Pharrell himself said that when he dropped Blurred Lines/Get Lucky, Columbia offered him a deal on the spot even tho he said that In My Mind would be his last (and only) album. Not sure if he felt pressured to do it or they assured him that the sales wouldnt matter since they're eating well off of Happy, which turned out to be more that most folks expected it to be. WHatever the case, I thought he would do like 200K considering that the album dropped damn near immediately after the Oscars and its sitting at #2 on iTunes. But aside from the Itunes stream, i didnt see it marketed outside of word of mouth on message boards/Twitter

I think his numbers will climb in the long run, only if they play it right though. The thing that stunts it is the lack of diversity, too many songs about the same topic(other than Happy) with the same vibe (no edginess, the album only has one emotion all the way through) to draw long term attention. If dude dropped another album that had different sounds like Clones (doesn't necessarily have to have any rap on it), sustainability over the long term would've been easier. Artists like Rihanna and Kanye are strong examples of varying the sounds/themes of their singles.

Nothing on this new album sounds like NERD shyt, not even the sound of his vocals (ton of falsettos and shyt). The songwriting style is different as well and Happy just sounds like more of what he did on the first Despicable Me soundtrack, but this song just took off on its own thing. The (popular) Neptunes era is over and for the last 4-5 years its no secret that Pharrell has been producing solo tracks for other artists (Yuna, Beyonce, Thicke, TI, Shakira, the VERY underrated/overlooked Gloria Estefan stuff).

But I'd think that the NERD fanbase woulda supported this album (it remains to be seen what the final numbers are since its only wednesday) but like I mentioned earlier, dude is rocking with a total other sound

Once the album falls off the charts they can say it went gold and hope nobody bothers to check Wikipedia to confirm. All the while Ross and MMG will continue being the hottest in the game

I dont care too much about NERD sales as long as the music is good. way back when the Neptunes were killing it on the radio, they could justify "lower" NERD sales because they made the $$ back on touring and Neptunes placements on high profile albums. But I agree that another NERD project is needed.
