Houston, by way of Pittsburgh.
Firstly i never said anything about punchlines, so you dont have to add in that 'just because hes not spitting punchlines bar after bar...' like that's what i said or insinuated.

Rick Ross is not at all one of the best lyrically and his wordplay is not ridiculous, if you believe so you are easily impressed. Hes not a punchline rapper so he doesn't spit punchline after punchline but im not talking about that because most punchline rappers suffer from the same drawback of not having any real content.

Ross's wordplay is never ever much about basic, he isnt a kendrick, nas, jay z, 3stakcs etc. these guys do the same thing, they all rap and these names are the benchmark for a great rapper. Ross is nowhere near the level of names like that, he is not on a level below that where you get names like Pusha T, royce, J.cole etc. his rhymes are not intricate at all, but not surprise its hard to have intricate rhymes with no subject matter.

Again, what is your definition of lyricism...? You havent answered the question. You're just naming the same ol' dudes when it comes to "who's the best."

As much of a fan as I am, I can't deny this was a disappointing outing from the boss, lazy and uninspired at best. Nothing here is memorable, quality sounds barely evocative of his prime far and few between, most of the album sounding like an obligatory release for the label rather than a project he was emotionally invested in. Given the hype, it's fair to say this is one of the year's worst albums. :francis:

Gunplay is the best on MMG. Been saying that.
Does he have a solo project? If so, is it good? Every time i hear a feature from him i say i'm gonna look for his catalogue. Dude kills features

edit: gonna give Living Legend a spin

I understand the hate for the album cuz it's only a few songs I'll actually go back to listen to, but are you nikkas deaf :dahell: Fascinated is easily the best song on here and I only seen a few nikkas even mention it. No lie when I got to that track I ran it back six times
Fascinated easily over Vegas Residency, Bogus Charms and Nobody's Favorite?

Lost Tapes 2 is my pick for worst album of the year. I was merely expressing how dissatisfied I was with this effort, adding a bit of hyperbole for emphasis. It's definitely Ross' worst album, though.

I never have and never will understand talk of Rick Ross being a great rapper, he always has been just abit above average to me.

He has nice good flow and a good rap voice granted, and he has a good ear for beats but he doesn't produce the beats so that shouldn't earn him any extra points in terms of his ability as an artist. Besides the good beats are used to hide two glaring facts, he has zero subject matter and he is nothing special lyrically.
What subjects would you like him to touch on?
Who are these rappers with such diverse subject matter?

IMO, you're still talking crazy. It's Better than the original POM, better than Trilla, better than Black Market & Hood Billionaire.

Well I'd say there are two lanes to it. The first is the punchline lane, rappers that drop punchline after punchline, the best of which relying heavily on strong wordplay, double entendres, similes and metaphors, like a Lil Wayne for the most part or a Ludacris. I liken this style of rapping to a particularly witty knock knock joke, which is still funny as hell first time you hear it, the same for rappers who rap that style, when done well it Will definitely pop you and I'm not saying it is bad, I like it but the fact is a knock knock joke is still a very basic way of telling a joke, the same way no matter how good the punchlines may be, punchline rap is still a basic way of structuring and spitting a rap verse. A more intricate joke with a back story explained well where the pay off is delayed is where the elite joke telling is, because it will still include strong wordplay, double entendres, similes and metaphors but way more time and care has been taken in its construction.

That Elite level joke telling like is the second lane of lyricism. That's when I verse is constructed in a way where no line is wasted, to the point where everything is worded in a particular way because it connects with the rest of the verse or aids a punch or something similar during the verse. This verse isn't about the punches even tho it gives them to you, neither is it about the metaphors, double entendres and witty wordplay even tho it gives them to you aswell, whereas in punchline rap those things are the main event in this type of rap they are just to aid the overall picture being painted. They use them in a way they can get a lot extra detail into the verses in just a single line or a bar or two, saying so much using so little words. It is the content that is the main event, they are just the icing on the cake which is the complete verse. I'd advise listening to Kendrick Lamar's verse on the Pusha T track 'Nosetalgia' as a great example of this type of verse. Another great example would be the Drake track 'the real her' in it you have drake just singing and saying lines with no real intricacy at all, Lil Wayne spits a verse where the main attraction Is the punchlines and Andre 3000 spits a fantastic verse that is an example of this second lane I'm talking about. The verse half to 2/3rds of Andre's verse on that track is brilliant.

You have to remember many people try to use metaphors and wordplay in raps but simply using it doesn't make you lyrical, its expected in rap. Its all about how intricate you can get with it while still tying it in to a particular contextual direction, for me the beat verses are those I listen to and on the 7th/8th listen I'm still picking up little things said and why it was said this particular way that I missed from the first couple of times. Rappers like Rick Ross and Big Sean for example attempt to rap the second way but they are much much weaker at it than the best, they can't be called great when they are so far behind the best they are just above average. The content is lacking, there is no deep intricacy to their metaphors, punches, wordplay etc, even in all that it is all on a simple basic level.

All really good tracks in my book. 7 are average and 2 or 3 of those are bad to me. I like the album.
