I wouldn’t believe this shyt if it wasn’t so many accounts from various artist he’s worked with saying the same thing. This nikka unintentionally fukked up the game by doing this cause he influenced a whole generation to try this shyt, which led to them punching in a few bars at a time and calling it “freestyling” Also, Jay Z doesn’t freestyle his verses. That’s the wrong term for what he does as well. He creates entire verses in his head without writing them down, then goes to the studio and spits the whole verse. Jay Z wordplay is much to intricate for him to be coming off the top and one taking verses.

Except for "bounce up like round ball". I would expect more even when going off the top.

This is a comment from someone who doesn't understand or appreciate wordplay and flow.
Every bar following the word "like" is not meant to make you go wow.

The bar fits perfectly in the flow and wordplay with four pound bar and soundboys (pronounced like a jamaican), makes sense in itself and in the context of the bar and section of the verse.

Sometimes I think basic rap is too advanced for too many people.

:stopitslime: in regards to the bold.

Right, likewise you dont need 'like' incorporated into a line for a dope bar. Quite a few emcees use that as a crutch.

:dead: at your post though, I said similar shyt in one of these Nas threads.

Back in MIA
Jay demonstrated his method on 20/20 or Dateline or one of those shows awhile back. He does the same thing Esther Dean does.

While the beats playing he hums a melody in a cadence over and over again finding words that fit the melody with every loop. 4 bars at a time. Over and over again.

Yeah, it's pretty similar to jazz improv, which is why he has so many different flows coz he can switch the pocket whenever he feels like, like when singers improvise their runs

Exactly. All anybody has to do is watch Fade To Black. He does this EXACT thing while working on 99 Problems.

Biggie did this too.

Now here’s the thing. The Master MC’s CAN freestyle dope verses from time to time but its NEVER done as a practice. Its a “feeling it in the moment” type thing. Jay, Nas, Andre 3000, Common, Black Thought and others have all spoken about times they freestyled verses that went on to become some of their most iconic shyt BUT they always clarified and said its not something they do very often.

I wish there was footage beginning to end of him doing a song. Yeah I know we have Fade to Black and MCHG footage but I need more footage in depth... like ppl say the same thing about Wayne and we have various footage of him freestyling but he’s just tackling on lines by punching in every 2 or 4 bars until the verse is complete

they make it sound like Hov isn’t punching and flat out going through the full 16-32.... but it’s not like it’s impossible.. ppl like King Los do it for longer than that

I’d like to see him starting to formulate the verses in his head, etc
