It was controlling. They were both wrong, if you broke, and damn near homeless, just swallow your pride and hustle for a few years so you can do what you like. But Ricky sounds like a controlling a$$hole who I would steer clear from as soon as possible
Dude could get the ticket to the job himself.

Ricky said he's damn near homeless and he could get his own spot for the first time. I feel like dude is probably young (under 25) and if that's the case almost everybody was damn near homeless at that age. Seems like he was putting more on it than it really is

He got him a job with a roommate, "potentially $500 in tips", and the job didn't require him to cut his hair but Ricky wants him to cut his hair. That sounds like some control shyt. Not like he's trying to help him out.

Ricky is conflating him trying to break into the entertainment industry where appearance matters exponentially more to him wanting this dude to look a certain for a job that didn't require it.

Dude could've told him from the jump that he wanted him to cut his hair, but waited til it's time to buy the plane ticket like a hoe.

It's very common for people to grow up and become the exact people they rebelled against in their youth. I'm not that surprised that a 52 year old man believes that much in respectability politics.

FWIW, It's a whole ass hoe move to just air old boy out for living in squalor on two separate occasions.
It's called growth. Kids don't know shiit, but they swear they do. Old folks were young once they know the game now. On one hand people say let kids live and learn, then the next is the elders failed us. It's truth in both.

You don't think appearance matters in a service industry job with wealthy patrons?

So if I told you if you work at my spot you could potentially make 100k if you wait on these people hand and foot. It's not likely you will earn that much but if you hustle anything is possible. Would you want that job?
I'm not the person he offered that job to. It sounds like someone young looking for an opportunity.

I never had dreads but I did have braids up until I was 21. U damn right I would've cut my hair for this kind of opportunity...who knows what kind of networking could be done at this job while u stacking paper.

The lesson here is temporary L's can lead to a life time of freedom. Once u get ur shyt together and own shyt u can look however u want.

Ricky offered the opportunity, I can't be mad at him for setting demands on the candidate he chose :manny:

Guys who were fortunate enough to be raised by their Fathers, saw them leave the house every day to jobs they might not have liked, doing work they might not have enjoyed to put food on the gotdamned table.

And those fathers were fukking slaves and fools if all that Stress and anti-living survival didnt lead to Freedom of expression for their sons.

The last 3 minutes he was fussing about dude not being respectful or presentable.

I'm more upset that he won't even give dude a chance unless he cuts his hair. Which I find weird bc he had dreads himself and he just stood up for dude that couldn't graduate until he cut his dreads. He's doing the same to his own family by holding him back for having dreads

Hair can/will grow back. If you're damn near homeless and have the opportunity to start stacking some paper then you need to do what you got to do. Get your money up until you're cool enough with the people you're working with or you're in a position where you don't have to worry about what Uncle Rickey thinks. Once you're up grow your dreads back.
Your locs ain't gonna pay your bills and put food on the table.:manny:

Well my main issue is that it seems like Ricky is telling him to make himself acceptable and non-threatening to these white folks. If you dont, I won't even get you the ticket for the job. Thats a fukked up result of trying to please white folks. It has nothing to do with his appearance or his work ethic.

Ricky even said dude was ready to go to work and get a fresh start. The only thing holding him back is Ricky and thats sad. Especially when he's trying to make it seem like he's doing so much for dude but he dont want to work for it. If I was dude I'd get my own ticket to the job and flourish without his help
he coulda worded it completely differently and probably got better results. the way he said it kinda seemed like he wanted a chance to son him and control him before helping him out.

he was better off saying that the job requires it as opposed to his own personal preference. im not opposed to cuttin hair or gettin more fresh, but dont talk to me like a bum

Another lesson is if you dont capitulate to a certain group you will never be successful.

True we can't be mad at his demands for helping but at the same time he's teaching him to be a follower and not a leader. He's holding dude back bc of his own personal feelings. Teach him to be an adult and make decisions for himself. If the job said "cut it or go home" that is a teachable situation. Not do it or I'm not helping.

If you look at the comedy circle that Rickey was trying to get into in the early 90's.... they all wore suits/dressed up and fit into a certain image. Being a noobdy AND not having the look wasn't gonna get him anywhere if he didn't play by the rules they set.

him trying to put that haircut as the final boss before he flys him out for a job that didn't require it, is some casting couch hoe move.
