Back in 2020, Ring announced a security camera for your car that connects to the company’s wider home security ecosystem. Now, slightly after its planned 2021 release date, Ring is opening pre-orders for Car Cam, the newest member of its security family. The unit is pretty small, but projects up and away on a cantilever arm mounted to your dashboard to give it the necessary height.

There are two cameras, one to keep an eye on the interior, the other facing out the front window to capture any insurance-worthy incidents. Should the system’s sensors be startled, it’ll trigger a recording, and alert you via the Ring app to show you what’s going on. Like pretty much every other Ring device, there’s a microphone and speaker, allowing you to watch (and communicate) with any unwanted visitors lurking in your vehicle.

In addition, Car Cam will automatically begin recording if you say “Alexa, record,” and has been designed to capture footage from traffic stops.

Looks like the company is running out of ideas. Watch them recreate goPros for city cyclists and call it revolutionary. :pachaha:

They are entering a saturated market of dashcams. I think this is only a win if they can get city contracts for all these police/ems/fire and utility vehicles. Or maybe if they partnered with the corporate offices of lift/uber. They need one of these big contracts:patrice:

Seems cool, the only way i see this fully working is being 4G / cellular connection

A wifi signal would degrade with distance

I don't even use the one on my Tesla 99.9% of the time.

But this will sell regardless.
Why not? Seems like a feature that would really come in handy if you were to have an accident and the other party is at fault.

When I'm driving it's recording by default. I'm talking about the sentry mode when you aren't driving. When I'm at work or any other place, I don't use it. Guess I should do it more, but feel no need to. :yeshrug:

Seems like a good way to expand surveillance state to me. If its stand alone and streams to hard drive cool, why do i need cell connection for? fukk THAT.. This will hurt drivers and be used against them that actually help, they already report their stuff to police, we are a hop skip away from this being signed into law as mandatory when insurance companies lobby for it..

Police and insurance companies will form like megatron to complete the surveillance state dystopia.. YIKES:hubie:

It’s not as bad of an idea as y’all think. It’s a great feeling to be able to view your car wherever in the world you may be.

The responses so far in this thread show lack of creativity
