Amiri was extremely instrumental in changing the landscape of my city during the 60's and post riots. His influence led to Newark having its first black mayor in Ken Gibson back in 1970. Last time I saw him was this past fall. His son Ras, who's running for mayor in Newark this may, had told me he had fallen ill. I was planning to go visit him but sadly that didn't happen.
