D’Angelo (as well as Badu) is personal to me because of a tiny club in Flatbush I lived blocks from at the time called “The Ark.”

The ORIGINAL Ark was a Brooklyn night club from the 80s going into the late 90s, playing hip-hop, House, R&B. One day some time in 94’ there was a music showcase by Kedar Entertainment owned by Kedar Massenburg. Ironically, he graduated from Erasmus High School which was two blocks from the Ark. He featured two artists that were under his management one day…

Erykah Badu
D’Angelo

This was before they dropped their albums as they were unknowns.

I didn’t make the showcase, but I was walking past the club when their street team were passing out mix tapes of both Badu and D’Angelo. The tapes featured one full length song & snippets of the rest of their forthcoming albums.

My ex & I spun “My Lady” to death and fell in love with the rest of the snippets. We KNEW D’Angelo had next and waited for the world to play catch up once the album would drop. So to see both he & Erykah blow up….it felt personal.

So his passing….it feels just as personal.

I wish I kept that mix tape as a keepsake
