RIP.

That just sucks. I think its one of the worst cancers you could get.

He wasn't prolific, but his quality control was on point. With both him and Erykah they treat this as more than a job. They don't put music out unless its up to their standards.

My Pops Forever RIP
D’Angelo (as well as Badu) is personal to me because of a tiny club in Flatbush I lived blocks from at the time called “The Ark.”

The ORIGINAL Ark was a Brooklyn night club from the 80s going into the late 90s, playing hip-hop, House, R&B. One day some time in 94’ there was a music showcase by Kedar Entertainment owned by Kedar Massenburg. Ironically, he graduated from Erasmus High School which was two blocks from the Ark. He featured two artists that were under his management one day…

Erykah Badu
D’Angelo

This was before they dropped their albums as they were unknowns.

I didn’t make the showcase, but I was walking past the club when their street team were passing out mix tapes of both Badu and D’Angelo. The tapes featured one full length song & snippets of the rest of their forthcoming albums.

My ex & I spun “My Lady” to death and fell in love with the rest of the snippets. We KNEW D’Angelo had next and waited for the world to play catch up once the album would drop. So to see both he & Erykah blow up….it felt personal.

So his passing….it feels just as personal.

I wish I kept that mix tape as a keepsake

when I bought the cassette to High School High soundtrack, I really only copped cuz they had a couple of Wu-Tang songs I wanted to hear. I had no clue who Erykah Badu was. He made me a fan of hers before I even knew what she looked like.

He had such a knack for doing covers in his own way and it came off like a brand new song which is exactly what you wanna do when you do a cover.

ATL paid.. Cali blazed
I remember taking the Voodoo album with me on a field trip in 4th grade. My teacher saw the album cover as I was getting on the bus and told me to give her the cd. She took my cd player and listened to it the entire day. When it was time to go home she gave it back and told me I had good taste in music. The next day she was playing The Root in the class room on low. That album is still one of my favorites of all time. Rip D Angelo.

She done worked a root
In the name of love and war
Took my shield and sword
From the pit of the bottom
That knows no floor
Like the rain to the dirt
From the vine to the wine
From the Alpha creation to the end of time

Bruh I posted one min after urs about this very song...I played this song for months and cried like a bytch when my x left me. Once I really understood the song I broke the curse she had over me.

Met an older brother in the grocery store last week while my wife and I were shopping, bro shared that his wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed away in a matter of weeks. :mjcry:
