It’s crazy how this dude only dropped three projects of greatness and literally hit each part of my growth.
Brown Sugar - Elementary School I remember killing Jonz in my Bonz as a kid and I recorded it on a cassette mixtape. I remember my parents use to go in on Brown Sugar and Lady.
Voodoo - I was a teenager in high school and I remember watching the behind the scenes of left and right with Red and Meth and was instantly hooked on it. I remember trying to look for that shyt on Napster and that shyt would never download correctly. I believe that was the first single for Voodoo but I was locked in. I remember when that album dropped I was like why isn’t music like this organic this is when I started thinking he was very similar to Prince and I was a big Prince fan as kid. This album is definitely probably my favorite out of his catalogue and this shyt made him a household name in black American culture.
Black Messiah - I was an adult when he came out with this in a Relationship and trying to figure life out fresh out of college. I remember this being a surprise drop and this shyt was like an early Christmas present. I was playing this album everywhere car, gym and clappping cheeks.
Each album is a testament to his growth in his artistry and he’s defintely one of my goats when it comes to R&B. Literally going through his catalogue the last couple days and just thinking how underrated he was and wish he blessed us with more material.
RIP King.
