Back in the day, wrestlers were often considered frightening people. You wouldn't mess with them because rumors abounded that they gouged out eyes, broke thumbs, and were just generally ornery and dangerous.
In that sense, New Jack was the last "real" professional wrestler. He protected the business in that regard.
