The objective is to prioritize starting pitching, not to leave a struggling starter in to reach the innings threshold while his ERA skyrockets or at the risk of injury. So the league's conversations have included carve-outs, instances when pitchers would not have to pitch the required six innings. Some instances when a starter would be allowed to leave early might include:

  • He throws 100 pitches
  • He gives up four or more earned runs
  • He gets injured (with a required injured list stint to avoid manipulation)
Outside of those exceptions, pitchers would have a mandate to make it through at least six innings. That would force teams to rethink their pitching staffs to meet the new standards.

This is a game changer if it is implemented

Interesting so they found a solution. There was an article about the way pitching has changed in the majors over the past 10 years in The Athletic a few months ago about just this. This is good to see.

Option 2 to make pitchers pitch longer
If you take your starter out before 6 innings you lose the DH. The new pitcher you bring in has to hit. So if glasnow get pulled. Othani gets pulled as well and the new pitcher replace Othani at bats. You can replace the pitcher with your bench

Stupid idea especially when 5 innings is all it takes for a win.

Teams would never want this. Pitchers are fragile enough as is
