Above the fray.
If you grew up going to Sunday School, his real life story plays out like the end of the Samson story.

While we’re in New Orleans

Did you ever hear about Mark Essex
And the things that made him choose to fight the Inner City Blues?
Yeah, Essex took to the rooftops guerrilla style
And watched while all the crackers went wild
Brought in six hundred troops, I hear brand new
To see them crushed with fear
Essex fought back with a thousand rounds
And New Orleans was a changing town
And rat a tat tat tat tat tat was the only sound, yeah

Essex was a former member of a New York-based branch of the Black Panthers. He is strongly believed to have specifically sought to kill white people and police officers due to racism he had previously experienced while enlisted in the Navy. His increasingly extremist anti-police, black supremacist, and anti-white views are believed to have solidified following a November 1972 violent clash between Baton Rouge police officers and student civil rightsdemonstrators, during which two young black demonstrators were shot and killed.[5]
