breh, I remember when I first heard this album/song, I was like this nikka saying the most outlandishly simple shyt but the dramatic pause and horn makes it work

This is still the best hip hop album of the last 10 years. Roc was tapped into a different frequency when he made this

he does it a LOT in We Ill:

"inhale the wind in my lungs to overcome (DOOOOOOOOO!)" - although she's exhaling, it sounds like a breath of fresh air

"i'm still payin for my past sins, sittin in a E class benz"......(dramatic pause to let you figure it out, like "u get it nikka? )

"hawaiian dime got her by the neck (DOOOOOOOOOO!) - his hand around her neck is making her hit vocals

"i killed the vampire with the steak (AHHHHHHH!)" - sounds like a vampire actually being stabbed with a stake
i actually like Rocs adlibs and think they should be louder, like when he says, "fukk u nikkas with a horses cock (UH!) " i laughed hard at that shyt when i first heard it

I'm not sure anything has surpassed it, certainly not from Roc's contemporaries.

Also in hindsight how much of a preview of Roc's future did we get on Peru? Super left sounding, somewhat off putting sonically the first few times you hear it, but that shyt has a dope vibe that nobody else really tries. Roc could easily do soul loops on every album and satisfy fans but I always appreciate how he seeks out different samples/sounds. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...but the pursuit of going left and taking risks is what separates him from everyone else in that sub-genre.

Yup. Especially noticeable to me on RR2: bitter dose

Songs like "kill you" , "the sauce" and "power" all on one album. A mix of left field and "traditional". Some of the albums after that just went way the fukk out there and because of that I have to really be in the mood for that type of mood of music.


I appreciate the risk taking no doubt about it. Lyrically he is always top tier, but sometimes his risk taking doesn't hit for me and that's fine, I still appreciate the ambitiousness and refusal to get complacent and go for blatant cash grabs.

Every album has some absolute gems. "Covid cough" is one of those love it or hate it tracks I really fukk with, same as "downtown 81"

Was reading back through this thread after being on an old Roc catalogue binge. Ya'll nailed it.

@The Jewnited States I really feel like RR2 is where he leaned harder into the left field eccentric stuff. I was trying to nail down when he started getting weirder, and RR2 really stands out as the starting point, and for the most part has only gotten weirder. A lot of Dark Horse and Elephant has been more straightforward, but a lot of everything after RR1 has leaned weirder. The 3 you mentioned on RR2 (Kill You, Sauce, Power), but also CVS and Bed Spring King are kinda weird too.

Some of it misses with me too (Wicked Days and Cryotherapy for example) but I love a lot of it too.

I don’t look at Kill You as weird at all. It actually fits right on Reloaded. Matter fact it sounds like it came from Reloaded. That song is one of them ones that made one of my boys a Roc Marci believer. lol.
