SoundCloud almost changed the game until labels killed the momentum and XXX dying pretty much ruining SoundCloud's reputation.

I'm surprised Spotify just doesn't create their own distribution wing and cut out the labels altogether.

First and foremost, Spotify makes most of its money from back catalogs. Cut out the labels then they lose access to all that classic music.
