If you actually want to be in full control of whatever it is you're doing, you HAVE to be the one putting up the money. There's more risk there, sure, but there's also more control. Fact of the matter is, when you're using other people's money, you're not really the owner/boss, you're just borrowing their authority.

I don't mean they own it legally, but they are essentially in control. If someone else put the money up for your endeavor (business or otherwise) and they want you/don't want you to do certain things, guess who's decision is ending up final? Particularly when/if you need continued financing.You get people to finance you, you still own it.
They can own your debt, but they will not own your company as long as you honor the contract i.e. pay the interest and principal. If you fail, you have limited liability.
