Jay had the name of the company wrong, but he did in fact pay MC Serch 2k to clear the sample, not Nas.
Serch sold Nas's publishing to Zomba for 125k and he stayed on to administer his publishing.

Nas didn't own his publishing, Zomba did, so that's who he actually paid.
But he gave the money to MC Serch, who was representing Zomba, that's why he thought he was paying Serch's publishing company.
