back then (93-96) the suns had the sonics' number/the sonics had the rockets' number/the rockets had the suns' number
suns & barkley avoided the rockets in 93/rockets avoided the sonics 94-95/sonics finally broke through in 96/
things only changed when the rockets traded for barkley (and they finally beat the sonics [with the former sun])
I remind people of this all the time. Rockets were a bad matchup for Suns, but the Sonics were for Rockets, who the Suns could beat

Clyde found his rhythm in the playoffs and they took OFF.

When Clyde dunked on Sean Elliot.... :banderas:
Clyde was special that playoff run. It’s like it clicked in his head that his was his last chance to actually win the ship. He played like he was goin retire that year like Elway.

Those late 90’s rocket transformed my thought process on team building. I’m hugely against trading away all your young assets for old stars. It’s nothin wrong with best player being old but you can’t be a squad full of old nigguhs. Shyt is unappealing to watch if they ain’t competing and you know they can’t get over the hump

Sonic’s was playing illegal defense guarding Hakeem
Every time? What about '93? Or in the 80's? Sonics just played at a bad pace for the Rockets. They ran up and down, while playing defense, and the Rockets didn't like playing that fast. Phoenix was better at running than Sonics, but Phoenix didn't play defense, so when the Rockets slowed the game down, Phoenix was at a disadvantage.

The moral of the story: in the world of sports, styles make fights.

Some teams/rosters are deliberately built to handle and beat specific teams(usually rival teams or the contending teams of the era)

A team know how to perfectly exploit and expose the weaknesses of a rival because it’s biggest strength is inversely the biggest weaknesses of the other team.

Sometimes a team just has somebother team’s number for some reason. Celtics always beat the Sixers in the playoffs regardless of roster changes/eras ,style of play, system , etc no matter the decade. Chiefs always beat the Bills regardless of roster changes, etc.

Yik specking about the 90’s matchup. Go look at the highlight of those series. The Sonic’s were double teaming Dream when he didn’t even have the ball. They ran basically an illegal zone defense against Dream, that dead sit difficult to entry pass and disrupted the rhythm of the rockets offenses back then that was illegal. You couldn’t run zones and had to stay within close proximity of your matchup assignment on the perimeter. Phoenix ignored all those rules and got away with it. And stop acting like it was straight domination of the series by a Seattle. Didnt the series go seven games and overtime?

Don’t do that:comeon:

Did you watch the full games? They actually used to show these games on ESPN Classic and NBA TV regularly, so you got to to see them over and over again. Rockets couldn't run with the Sonics, bottom line. The rule wasn't that you couldn't double without the ball, it was that you couldn't be outside of arm's length of the person you were defending. You couldn't get caught there. Sonics found a way to manipulate that rule, being that they were a long team. They weren't doubling him, they had a man sagging, but close enough. Hell, they were triple teaming Hakeem too...especially in the paint. But that's also how they got away with being one of the best defensive teams. They tried the same style of defense against the Bulls, and tried it with Suns...and everyone they played.

But the fact remains, Houston lost to Sonics like 4-5x during the Hakeem era, and the only time they beat them was with Chuck. Sonics just had Rockets number due to style of gameplay.
