New limits on voting and social media sites sought by Gov. DeSantis clear Florida Senate

TALLAHASSEE – Two of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ top priorities – restricting mail voting and drop boxes and imposing new regulations on social media platforms – were approved Monday by the Florida Senate.
The legislation cleared mostly on party-line votes. Both measures have been attacked by opponents who call the governor’s moves on issues emerging from last November’s presidential election unconstitutional and unnecessary.
SB 90 would limit mail-in and drop box voting
The elections bill (SB 90) is part of a nationwide push by Republicans to tighten limits on voting, especially vote-by-mail and drop boxes, techniques that flourished during a 2020 campaign conducted amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The legislation limits drop boxes to early voting sites during their open hours and requires voters who want mail ballots to request them before every general election, beginning after next year’s contests.
“Let the people vote,” said Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, in arguing against the bill. “Let the people vote the way they would like to vote.”
Gibson said restrictions included in the bill are “just a vindictive way to try to punish people” for ousting former President Donald Trump from the White House.
A separate bill (SB 7072) subjects Twitter, Facebook and other online platforms to potential penalties for deplatforming users without explanation was inspired by Trump being banned, along with hundreds of other users, for inflammatory comments surrounding the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
